![]() The modern remakes of old classics like Fly Me to the Moon and Take on Me are both so great that I've genuinely added them to my actual playlists. In fact, I have actually been listening to the soundtrack while writing this review. Seeing each material rendered in 4K allows for an appreciation that is unheard of on Nintendo's current platform. Despite the lack of a cinematic view, the game and the real life sets appear to look the exact same. I remember when the game was first revealed they showed off real life sets of levels from the game. The enhanced power of the PS5 allows for each strand of each material to stand out from one another. Reminscient of the bliss that one gets while playing Yoshi's Wooly World or any other of the "craft like" games made by Nintendo. ![]() Sackboy is also nothing to scoff at when it comes to the other senses. That alongside the adaptive triggers whenever Sackboy picks up an item or punches an enemy really puts you into CraftWorld. The rumble used in the new Dualsense controller is a fantastic example of why the new haptic feedback is no joke. I believe that the main reason Sony pushed this as one of their big new PS5 games is because believe it or not, this game rocks in the next gen feels category. Starting with the overall vibe of the game. And with that said, we can finally start talking about what this game gets right. Honestly, more power to all of you who do enjoy it, but personally this type of collectable system is the type that discourages me from wanting to 100% this game. The reason I say this is a nitpick is because I know for a fact that there are a bunch of people who openly love this style of gameplay. There are also almost always multiple different costumes, and 3 to 5 dreamer orbs that you must collect as they actually unlock more levels and allow you to progress through the game. These almost always end up in the thousands, and they aren't even the only collectable in each level. In Sackboy, you collect orbs, and you get a trophy at the end of each level dependent on how many you obtained overall. BUT, as many of you know, I do not like when games create a large abundance of small items that you have to collect for some arbitrary reason. Now I am very aware at this point that this is entirely my opinion, and most people disagree. The only other thing that I'm not a huge fan on is how the collectables are handled. I imagine this would be more of an issue for collectors who are attempting to 100% the game, but more on that later. Due to the low difficulty of the majority of the game this does tend to be a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, but every now and then there will be a jump or platform that just does not want to mesh with this platformer's camera. To give a good reference I would say it's better than the Crash Bandicoot remaster an a decent bit worse than Super Mario 3D World. I say mostly because there are some spots in the game where you can zoom in a little bit, however the amount that this helps with platforming is miniscule. And just as you might have been able to guess, my biggest problem with this 3D platformer with (mostly) locked camera angles is the camera itself. Now, besides the name, let's go ahead and discuss everything else in this game that I had a problem with. I mean at this point there best hope in marketing was probably to try and shoehorn Sackboy himself into either Fortnite or Minecraft. Putting the words Sackboy, big, and adventure all in the same title immediately guarantees that 75% of people playing video games will never be interested in seriously purchasing your game. Now here's the part where I'd typically prove you wrong, and don't misconstrue my words as I will, but first let me agree with you. ![]() Now, with a name like that I'm sure many of you will immediately discredit this title. These two being Spider-Man Miles Morales and what we are talking about today, Sackboy: A Big Adventure. However phrasing the PS5's launch lineup in this way would be negating two very important games. Obviously the one game that I mentioned earlier was the Demon Souls remake (which I do plan on covering soon). Not the Xbox Series X though because that thing is just a PC for people who don't want a PC. ![]() In all fairness I am being somewhat hard on the PS5. Microsoft with all of their *checks wikipedia* zero exclusives and Sony with their one, count it, one remake of a PS3 game. it's the beginning of the new console generation and everyone is bringing out the big hitters. ![]()
